However, they’re perturbed by this walk. After all, There is Not Usually a Hole. Then again, there seems to be a noise that Betsy’s inclined to ignore, ‘WAAAAAH! I can’t find you…’ Thereafter, a banana is thrown into Betsy and Philippa’s path. Betsy reminds Philippa that holes are not the usual places from which bananas emerge. Surely it’s best to see what happens next, although that will involve ‘watching snacks’. Daisy Hirst is amongst Bookwagon‘s favourite picture book makers. She writes REAL stories, with REAL narratives alongside such fascinating characters whose feelings we understand. Thereafter, as Betsy and Philippa are drawn into the hole’s characters, we recognise Betsy’s dilemma. What of the brilliant route we take through Betsy and Philippa’s journey through the hole’s twists and turns? Then again, what of Nelson and Not- Philippa? Could it be, in turn that we, alongside Betsy, understand Nelson’s situation? How might Betsy react? Like this writer/ illustrator’s Alphonse, You’re Ruining the Show! within a fabulous series, this is such inspired, engaging and wonderful storytelling. Bookwagon loves There is Not Usually a Hole.
