After all, these five reprobates wear name labelled football shirts, albeit stinking of lost property and defeat? Then again, this five have no idea where they’re headed and what’s expected of them. Furthermore, they don’t realise that Planet Earth’s fate rests on their feet (and hands.) What could possibly go wrong? Like The World’s Worst Alien there are a series of misunderstandings that make this story hilarious. Then again, there are discoveries to be made, from the way Phil’s stash might help the five, to the truth about Mia’s tattoo. Furthermore, what about this planet? This contest? The opposition, who might employ a range of diversionary tactics, and have a raft of player advantages? What’s more, what could happen if Nauton and Gaux realise the truth about this GOAT quintet? Alan Joyce was shortlisted, deservedly for the Times/Chicken House Children’s Fiction Competition with this novel. It’s a laugh-out-loud triumph of hope over ability, friendship, football and aliens!
