Description Share Post Monster Down Deep Amy Fellner Dominy (Pushkin Children’s) Cassie Stein doesn’t wear the silver bracelet that connects her to Emma 1 and Emma 2. Somehow, since Emma 2 came along, the friendship has changed. It’s as though she has to be approved with them. Then again, Cassie has enough to worry about. A lot of that is her breathing, which she tries to explain to her arch nemesis, T.J. They’re competing to locate the diamond necklace lost when the luxury yacht, Spirit, capsized. The jewels must be somewhere along this coast! What’s more, Cassie’s armed Sylvia (her metal detector) and has her hunt planned out. However, what she discovers changes everything. Blue is trapped in the shallows of the shoreline. He dreams of his life with Orange Fish, the time he had friends. However, he doesn’t expect to make a friend with a human, Cassie, whom he understands and trusts. Monster Down Deep is a wonderful read. Not only are we party to Cassie’s innermost thoughts and fears, her family and daily life, but then the changes wrought through Blue. Like My Friend the Octopus, for example, this is a considered examination of our relationship with the natural world. What is sentience? Do we have greater feelings and longings than other living creatures? Then again, when push comes to show, how brave can we be, really? Amy Fellner Dominy‘s middle grade novel is a warm, beautiful read. We recommend Monster Down Deep to our readers.
