Description Share Post University of Cambridge: This Book Will Make You a Scientist: University of Cambridge Try Your Own Very Own Experiments Inspired by 25 Amazing Scientists Dr Sheila Kanani, illustrated by Ellen Surrey (Nosy Crow) Professor Patricia Wiltshire‘s childhood love inspired her astounding career as a forensic scientist solving many difficult, well-known cases. However, she does not appear in University of Cambridge: This Book Will Make You a Scientist. Then again, the notion that inspiration and determination are the groundings for scientific careers and discoveries is clear. Thereafter, Dr Sheila Kanani, whom we know from How to Be an Astronaut amongst other titles, introduces notable scientists across centuries and from around the world. Not only do we learn what they did and do, but how we might replicate their work. Thereafter, we begin with Mesopotamian chemist, Tapputi- Belatekallim. It seems that she collected and distilled ‘flowers, natural oils, herbs and tree sap with water and other liquids’ . With these, she created perfumes for the Iraqi royal family. Within the associated guidance, we learn what equipment we’ll need alongside how to use each at every stage. After all, don’t we want to do what she did? Then there is engineer, Archimedes. It seems he arrived at a way to calculate volume, alongside designing ‘weapons and defences to protect the people of Syracuse from the Romans’. Thereafter, we meet Persian astronomer, Kamāl Al- Dīn Al- Fārisī. He investigated refraction and created the camera obscura. Furthermore, other scientists featured, include archaeologist, Mary Anning, physician James Jay, physicist, Isaac Newton. It seems that the strength of This Book Will Make You a Scientist is not only the deft biography, but the accessibility of each story. This means we learn about each subject alongside realising how their work applies to us. Thereafter, we see how we might practise what they did. What’s more, there’s a range of sciences presented through the subjects and activities. All of it is so approachable, with Ellen Surrey’s illustrations, and the whole presentation inspiring us to need to be involved. We are so impressed by this book. What a wonderful creation, what quality research! We suggest it is ideal for home and school libraries and use.
