Description Share Post Words from War: A Collection of Poetry About Conflict Foreword by Joseph Coelho, illustrated by Flora Delargy (Hachette) Achilles’ ‘live tears flowing‘ to ‘wander[ing] in anguish,- flaming over sea and shore’ at Patroclus’ death. Although Homer‘s Iliad details a conflict considered mythological, the pain is ‘all too human and real’. This extract opens Words from War: A Collection of Poetry About Conflict. Thereafter, the works are from real battles. We turn, thereafter, to the ‘six hundred‘, surrendered, it seems, through error, in Tennyson’s Charge of the Light Brigade. In fact, this might be the most familiar poem within this outstanding book. It seems, as we continue, that we travel across decades of action and its results, around the world. What’s more, there are works from poets of all ages. For example, we’ve Maria Docheva’s Letters to a Dead Soldier. This poet was twelve when she wrote her poem, imagining ‘all the Ukrainian soldiers affected by the war‘. Then again, we’ve Michael Rosen’s account of his mother recalling her wartime. This writer’s research continues in The Missing. What’s more his On the Move details the experiences of the millions of refugees created by warfare. Award winning Somali poet, Asha Lil Mohamud Yusuf is one of them. The extract from The Writer’s Rights explains the dehumanisation of truth, voice and hope. Bookwagon is awed and moved by Words from War: A Collection of Poetry About Conflict. While Joseph Coelho offers the foreword, he is also the curator. This means that he introduces and expands upon the circumstances of each selection. What’s more, he also concludes this book. Then again, Flora Delargy’s pictures demonstrate naïve, reflective authenticity. What an essential, powerful, glorious book.
