A Chick Called Charm should be called Miracle, consider Jasmine’s family. After all the tiny, newborn chick seemed to have perished in the freak Springtime storm. It was only Jasmine’s body warmth that inspired a frail heartbeat. However, it’s left Jasmine and Tom attending to Charm constantly, in order for the little chick to enjoy a real life. For starters it must be able to stand, and then walk, and thereafter to feed itself. That’s round the clock attention. Furthermore, Jasmine mustn’t, however tempted, imprint herself on Charm. This chick merits a farm life and farm company. It must be returned to its mother, Feathers, and sibling chicks. Jasmine and Tom learn from Nadia, Jasmine’s vet, mother, how to attend to this step. Yet, what if Feathers won’t accept her missing chick- or worse? Readers are not only engaged by such a real, dramatic and engaging story, but learn along the way, from chicken colours to their characters too. We love this authenticity. Then again, Helen Peters draws the various characters so truthfully, so that we appreciate Jasmine and Tom’s determined animal husbandry, alongside glimpsing what real farm life entails, e.g., TB testing.
